With a final polish of my butterscotch riding boots, I tossed the polish onto it's shelf with flourish. Daisy whinnied impatiently in her stall, anxious to run. I opened her stall door, hooked on her bridle, and hoisted myself up on the saddle. We trotted briskly out into the arena, where the jumps were. I made a clicking noise, and Daisy took off galloping toward the jump.
"Alana!" I heard a voice call. I turned to locate where the voice came, right as Daisy leapt over the bar. My foot slipped out of the saddle, and I tumbled to the hard dirt, my head hitting the metal bar.
Everything went black.

Love's so interesting. It's like a spell, one that enchants you, and posesses you.
I lay my favorite meadow, my hair fanned out against the plush grass, pick daisies.
Jake loves me, he loves me not... Jake loves me, he loves me not... Jake loves me...
I came to the last petal.
He loves me not...
I knew I shouldn't be so superstitious as to believe the daisy, but a sickening feeling crept into my stomach. It was too much like the last time I fell in love... with Brendan.
He was perfect, a musician, smart, funny, and with a big heart. I loved him. I wanted him to be mine... and it seemed that he felt the same. I was blissful... until I realized that he was using me to get closer to my best friend. I had fallen too hard for him... only to be heartbroken.
Now it was the same situation... perhaps he liked Leah. Or Gina. Or...
I sighed, remembering my old friend's words,
"Alana would totally rather fall off her horse than fall for another guy... she's so oblivious, to not see that Brendan liked Eliza, not her..."
The words still stung, though they were spoken a year ago. I made a promise to myself aloud, "I, Alana, will NOT fall for another boy until I am positive he likes me back."
I smiled confidently, but the sickening feeling still hadn't disappeared from the pit of my stomach.

2nd Tryout for Alana!!!

I glanced at the mirror, only to gasp. My usually tame blonde hair stuck up all over in a horrific case of hat head, and my makeup-free face seemed greasy and blotchy, and maybe a bit sunburnt. Had I looked that bad talking to- my heart skipped a beat as a thought his name- Jake? I winced at the thought. After being shocked by his appearance during my morning ride, we spent the rest of the day talking and galloping around the property. He promised to meet me at the campfire tonight when we finally departed, at 4:00. A quick peek at my watch told me I had exactly an hour before we met again.

Forty-five minutes later, I stood in front of the full-length mirror in our cabin, examining every aspect of my 45-minute makeover. My hair fell in a cascade of blonde waves, spilling gently onto my light cotton sundress. I smiled into the mirror, and looked at my minimally made-up face, then added another coat of pale pink lip gloss. My old riding boots were scruffy and covered with dust, but I didn't have any other options for shoes. A horse bit necklace and bracelet added a finishing touch to the ensemble, and they glinted in the warm sunshine that filtered through the window. I grabbed my Camp Tawonga Songbook, and headed out the door, filled with hope and exicitement, for the nightly campfire.
